Mission Beach

Latitude 17 52 18

If you are searching for private, secluded coves and your own beach for the day, try Mission Beach and enjoy a change of pace, where peace and tranquillity are in store. Linked by 14 kilometres of palm fringed golden beaches, Mission Beach comprises four village communities which offer a relaxed pace, yet provide holiday makers with a good variety of restaurants, cafes and shopping facilities.

Mission Beach is a departure point for cruises to the Great Barrier Reef and is fast becoming a natural adventure playground offering the visitor the opportunity to enjoy whitewater rafting down the rainforest rivers, leap out of a plane at 14,000 feet in a tandem parachute, jet-ski around Dunk Island, bush walk the pristine Misty Mountain Trails or take the eco-option of a sea kayak to the offshore national park Islands.

The Mission Beach region has resorts, holiday apartments, cabins, caravan parks, bed and breakfasts, eco-retreats and backpackers.

Mission Beach is the home base of the region's rare and beautiful cassowary birds. Visitors are asked to take extra care when driving in the area and keep an eye out for this endangered species. There are plenty of places to stay and things to see and do in this beautiful region south of Cairns.

There is an excellent Wet Tropics Information Centre, which can provide you with information on the twenty Tropical Islands just off shore, including the resort Islands of Dunk and Bedarra, and fourteen kilometres of sandy beaches along the coast. Daily access to Tropical Islands via water taxis and ferry is possible from South Mission Beach. A perfect bird's eye view of Mission Beach is available from The Horizon, the superb resort perched atop the hill at South Mission Beach.

Visitors come for the perfect beaches (South Mission was recently named Tropical North Queensland's cleanest beach) with their idyllic offshore Tropical Islands, and then stay on because they have fallen in love with the tropical rainforests and the young, thriving community.
