Tropical Islands

Latitude 14 40 04

Picture yourself on a secluded Tropical Island, basking in sunshine, surrounded by shimmering translucent waters and enjoying the balmy breezes.... Welcome to the thousand plus tiny drops in the ocean that make up the Tropical Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Tropical Islands that make up the Great Barrier Reef are what dreams are made of. You will be spoilt with choice - whether it's a luxury spa resort indulgence, rainforest cabins, beachfront bungalows or completely uninhabited where the only footsteps you will see are your own. It's your choice. Bordered by tropical waters, the Tropical Islands are tranquil havens surrounded by pristine white sands made of corals that were once part of the reef. Accessible by air or sea, some of the better-known Tropical Islands include Orpheus, Hinchinbrook, Dunk, Bedarra, Green, Fitzroy and the Frankland Islands.

What to See

  • Lizard Island, some 80kms north of Cooktown, is a resort island with beautiful beaches and excellent deep-sea fishing.
  • The Low Isles, 15 kms off Port Douglas, is a picturesque destination for day visitors and the location of one of the most famous lighthouses on the coast.
  • Green Island closest to Cairns, is a 12 hectare coral cay and features a low-rise resort, an underwater observatory and a marineland.
  • The Frankland Islands are a group of five Islands protected as a national park within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, south of Cairns.
  • Popular Dunk Island appears to be only metres from the township of Mission Beach. It is, in fact, a ten-minute boat ride, but seems a million miles away from the mainland.
  • Beyond Dunk are the exclusive hideaways of Bedarra and Orpheus Islands, which feature villas and bures set amidst tropical greenery and private beaches approaching perfection.
  • Finally, there's the pristine wilderness of Hinchinbrook Island, Australia's largest island national park.
