Description

Barcaldine celebrates its history, culture and lifestyle every May Day long weekend with the Tree of Knowledge Festival.

Beginning Friday night with the Hillbilly Hoedown with the Hillbillygats and Bill Chambers at the Town Hall, it continues Saturday morning with markets in Oak Street followed by a country race meeting. The Tree of Knowledge Cup and the fashion on the field competitions are always hotly contested. Saturday night's food festival at the Showgrounds features a show and shine competition and a street cruise for Drag Race participants.

Sunday is the Drag Races with Barcaldine Airport turned into a drag strip. An ecumenical service and music in the park is followed by Rugby League in the afternoon.

Monday is markets followed by the famous May Day street parade and the ""worlds richest goat races"".

The weekend is a whirlwind of fun, frivolity and festival activities which offers something for everyone.

    The weekend program offers a number of children program items.

    There is access and facilities for disabled patrons are available throughout the town area with easy access from the main street.

    Pets Allowed:
    Yes. Pets are only permitted in the areas away from any animal sports being held. All pets must be restrained.

    Further Details:
    Barcaldine offers a number of accommodation options for visitors, from camping, caravan sites, motel, hotel, dormitory style and a guest house. Admission prices may apply to certain program items over the weekend.

    How To Get There:
    All of the highways leading to Barcaldine are fully sealed, double lane bitumen. Barcaldine is approximately 1215 kilometres north of Brisbane, 580 kilometres west of Rockhampton and 755 kilometres east of Mount Isa. Queensland Rail operates twice weekly trips from Brisbane to Barcaldine aboard the Spirit of the Outback passenger train. Greyhound coach service operates daily to and from Brisbane. Paradise Coaches operate a twice weekly service from Rockhampton, Emerald and Mackay. Qantas Link flies regularly into Barcaldine from Brisbane. Travel time is approximately two hours. A Budget Car Hire agent operates in Barcaldine.

    Inclusions:
    Most events are free of charge with the exception of the Sports Dinner, Rugby League and Revfest. Admission Prices to these events are calculated and governed by an independent body and revised annually.
