Description

Their purpose at Cicada Woman Tours is to try to give you a sense of the way in which Aboriginal people thought about themselves and their environment which allowed them to live here for so long at peace with the land.

Traditionally Aboriginal people thought of themselves as part of nature. Their very being was inextricably linked with the world around them: landforms, watercourses, plant, animals and stars. This is their spirituality - the basis of their existence and way of life - which helps them to manage their relationships with the natural world, other people and the universe.

Sharman has listened to and learnt from many traditional people all over Australia, including from her father's family at Utopia, north of Alice Springs. She will take you on a walk along the creek and she will help you feel something of the way the ancestors would have felt and connected with the spirits of the place.

Aboriginal Spirituality

Sharman at waterhole

Australian Aboriginal had a sophisticated philosophy which gave them a meaning for life and guided their behaviour. The details of this philosophy are not well known because of the destruction of their culture during the process of colonialism and many southern Australian Aboriginal people have lost touch with much of it. Sharman has spent most of her life in eastern/southern Australia but has strong connections to her father's Anmatyerre people from north of Alice Springs. She has discovered the power of her traditional philosophies and will guide you through a process of learning about and understanding the values inherent in these philosophies. She will do this by sharing something of her story and taking you into the bush to feel its power and presence.

In her activities, Sharman has the support and encouragement of the original people of the area she works in, the Githabul people of Warwick, Queensland to whom we are grateful for their generosity and positive attitude to life and other people.
