The Daintree Rainforest in Australia's Wet Tropics is the World's oldest rainforest. Its Gondwana origins have been established through 160 million years of continuous growth. It is positioned north of the Daintree River adjoining the Great Barrier Reef.

Its uniquely primitive features can be seen at Cooper Creek Wilderness situated directly below the epicentre, Thornton Peak. Guided interpreted rainforest walks and packages show case the extraordinary grandeur and beauty, the exceptional biodiversity and the ancient Gondwana plants and animals. It is the only world heritage nature refuge where you can explore magnificent pristine fan palm forests in small exclusive groups with a local expert.

Walks are on natural walking trails, traversing outstanding old-growth forest that cannot be seen elsewhere. Guides are inhabitants who love sharing their expertise and enthusiasm.

Tours range from two hour guided day or night tours, to the Cooper Creek Wilderness Experience that includes the walk, a one hour mangrove cruise in search of elusive crocodiles and a delicious lunch beside the Cooper Creek. Children:
Special rates apply for day walks and packages for children four years to 13 years. Infants zero to three years are no charge. There are no special rates for the night walk and children under eight are generally not accepted. Walks are usually two hours in duration and fairly easy walking; however parents must ensure that their children remain on the path ad that they do not interrupt during discussions. Children are given encouragement to participate and are valued as keen spotters.

Disabled:
Cooper Creek Wilderness is natural rainforest. There are no modifications to accommodate physical disability that requires wheelchair access. National parks provide boardwalks with full access. A reasonable level of fitness is required; however walks are leisurely with emphasis on interpretation and appreciation. Access may be unsuitable for persons with limited mobility; wildlife behaviour and fauna sightings are unpredictable. Participants need to accept the risks and uncertainties associated with a genuine wilderness experience.

Further Details:
This is a real rainforest product. No boardwalks, no man-made constructions to interfere with the beauty and grandeur of nature at its best. Their forest has not been modified to allow wheel-chair access and the natural environment does not suit people who want to keep their shoes dry.

How To Get There:
Self driving to Cooper Creek Wilderness is recommended and the combination package of day and night walks includes a swim and evening meal. The Cooper Creek Wilderness Experience plus night walk combination is the ultimate eco-tourism package.
Transfers are available from Cape Tribulation Resorts at AUD20.00 per person and AUD40.00 for the Combination of Day Package, evening meal and nocturnal walk by arrangement. Minimum of four people.
Self drive to the Daintree, 20 kilometres north the Daintree River Ferry, cross the causeway and turn left onto their driveway.
Courtesy transfers may be requested from Port Douglas and Mossman for the Ultimate Daintree Experience and from Cape Tribulation Resorts for the Cooper Creek Wilderness Experience and the day and night walks.
Bring drinking water, repellent, comfortable walking shoes, cameras and swim suits if you wish to risk a swim, weather permitting.

Only Cooper Creek Wilderness can provide access to the Grand Fan Palm Galleries of the Daintree Rainforest.

The greatest opportunity to observe some of Australia's most unique wildlife in natural habitat occurs after nightfall. Temperature, rainfall and moonlight all have profound effects on wildlife behaviour. The most ideal conditions occur on the hottest, wettest and darkest nights. By contrast, brightly moonlit nights in the middle of the cooler, drier periods confer significantly greater challenges. Cooper Creek Wilderness night walks ethically immerse the traveller into the very depths of the world's oldest surviving rainforest. There are no artificial structures linked to the security of a roadside car park. Inhabitant guides select a different trail on successive nights to showcase the authenticity of the nocturnal landscape and particularly in terms of its habitat values.

CCW6 4 Hour Greater Wilderness Tour

Finally, a rainforest experience that showcases the best of the world's oldest surviving rainforest - without modification! Travellers to tropical north Queensland are directed into a variety of 'Daintree Rainforests' featuring artificial structures. The choices are incredible. The greatest difficulty would seem to be gaining access into pristine rainforest without any gimmickry at all. Genuine old-growth rainforest, spectacular in its grandeur is presented not through the construction and maintenance of a formal trail network, but rather through the knowledge and memory of the inhabitant guide. Over twelve months of familiarisation has brought a new concept of a longer, more intensive guided tour to fruition.
