Modern art has long been an area of focus in Brisbane. The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art is home to the Institute of Modern Art, founded in 1975, which continues to deliver programs dedicated to emerging and established artists. Matthew Barney - named 'the most important artist of his generation' by the New York Times - is among the calibre of artists featured.
The Centre is also a performance space with regular music, screenings and theatrical events. It was named after the great poet and activist Judith Wright.
