Description
Follow in the pioneering footsteps of the men and women who made their way to the goldfields west of Cairns in the early 18th century with only a wheelbarrow to carry their possessions. The Great Wheelbarrow Race is a gruelling 149 kilometre race between Mareeba and Chillagoe raising funds for local charities and providing a boost to smaller communities along the way. It is run in three stages: Mareeba to Dimbulah (50 kilometres); Dimbulah to Almaden (65 kilometres); Almaden to Chillagoe (34 kilometres).
... moreAttracting 450 competitors annually, the event is a test of endurance for solo competitors as they can be on the road pushing a wheelbarrow for up to nine hours each day. Teams of up to 10 people also compete, often wearing themed costumes for the first day of the race and taking turns to push the wheelbarrow during the three-day race.
