Description

The Telegraph Track on Moreton Island National Park lets you explore the most natural of the large sand islands located in Moreton Bay's sheltered waters.

This hilly track passes through woodlands and heath and is great for bird watching. See the remains of the telegraph line that serviced the lighthouse along the track edge.

Walkers can enjoy distant views out to sea and to the Cape Moreton lighthouse.

Walk Hints

Walking in soft sand can be very tiring. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Always carry drinking water.

It can get very hot on Moreton Island, so walking is best done early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Enjoy the wildflowers in spring and look for migrating humpback whales in late winter and spring.

The Telegraph Track highlights bird watching, open woodlands and ocean views. The Track is 16 kilometres long and should take about six hours. The track has a moderate difficulty rating. Walking in soft sand can be very tiring. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Always carry drinking water. It can get very hot on Moreton Island, so walking is best done early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

How To Get There:
Access to the island is by barge or launch. The barge trip from Whyte Island near Lytton or Scarborough takes two hours. Tangalooma Resort operates a passenger launch from Pinkenba. Pre-booking is essential for all transport. Four-wheel-drive is necessary to get around the island.
