A clear, blue lake surrounded by cool rainforest, Lake Eacham offers swimming, birdwatching, picnic areas and shady walking tracks.
In geological terms, the lake is a maar - a volcanic crater formed by massive explosions resulting from superheating of groundwater. The crater has filled with water, forming a lake 65 metres deep. A number of rainforest communities can be seen along the three kilometres Lake circuit track.
Over 180 bird species have been recorded from the rainforest here and you may be lucky enough to see one of the few species of marsupial active during daytime - the small musky rat-kangaroo.
Never jump or dive into natural waterways.
Wear hats and protective clothing to prevent sunburn.
Watch your step; keep well away from cliff edges, waterfalls and slippery rocks.
Rainfall is strongly seasonal, with most falling December to April.
