The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of dense rainforest, steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls. This famous railway winds its way on a journey of approximately one hour and 45 minutes from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest.
The Cairns-Kuranda Railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891 and even today is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. The Kuranda Scenic Railway can be joined at Cairns Railway Station or Freshwater Railway Station for morning departures to Kuranda. Journeys from Kuranda Station to Cairns run in the afternoon. The journey includes an English commentary and all passengers receive a souvenir Z-card portraying the history of the railways construction, a map Kuranda and the journey. Cairns Station, with its dedicated themed platform, is centrally located and within easy walking distance of most city accommodations. A popular departure point is Freshwater Railway Station. Situated in a quiet, leafy suburb visitors can enjoy a hearty breakfast in authentic antique railway carriages. Freshwater Railway Station also includes a museum, pioneer cottage and gift shop.
How To Get There
The Cairns Railway Station is located on Bunda Street, Cairns. If you are walking from Cairns city the station is accessible via Cairns Central Shopping Centre. The Freshwater Railway Station is located on Kamerunga Road, Freshwater. If you are travelling from the Northern Beaches or Port Douglas take the Freshwater exit off the Captain Cook Highway. The Kuranda Railway Station is located at the very end of Coodoo Street, Kuranda. If you are travelling by car take the Kuranda exit off the Kennedy Highway.
