Description

The Coomera circuit is located in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park. This stunning national park covers 20,590 hectares and boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area's forests, creeks and waterfalls. Dramatic lookouts afford views over the Gold Coast, south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area (formerly known as CERRA), which includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world. The scenic Coomera circuit passes through subtropical and warm temperate rainforest and giant brush box forest of Lamington National Park.

The gorge is 160 metres deep. Views from the lookout platform provide dramatic evidence of the power of erosion, which has cut through a thick resistant rhyolite lava flow. The circuit climbs beside Coomera Gorge, crossing the river several times before rejoining the Border Track and returning to Binna Burra.

Walk Hints

This walk requires a moderate level of fitness. Allow a full day and take plenty of rest breaks. Wear insect repellent to discourage leeches. Take food, drinking water and a raincoat. The river crossings along this walk involve rock-hopping: they can be hazardous after heavy rain and should not be attempted when the river is in flood. Stay behind the safety fences.

Best Time To Go

The altitude of Lamington National Park provides a great escape from the Summer heat, although winter walkers are rewarded with clear views and a lesened chance of rain and leeches.

The scenic Coomera circuit leaves the Border Track 1.9 kilometres from the track entrance and passes through subtropical and warm temperate rainforest communities, and giant brush box Lophostemon confertus forest. The gorge is 160 metres deep. The circuit track continues to ascend while following the edge of the Coomera Gorge. It crosses the river several times before rejoining the Border Track and returning to the Binna Burra carpark. The river crossings involve stepping from rock to rock, which can be hazardous after heavy rain and should not be attempted when the river is in flood.

The Coomera Circuit is 17.5 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and will take approximately six to seven hours.

How To Get There:
Binna Burra is via Beechmont, about 95 kilometres or a 90 minute drive from Brisbane, or 70 minutes from Broadbeach, about 38 kilometres to Beechmont via Nerang. From the north, take Pacific Motorway exit 34 and route 92 to Tamborine, and route 90 to Canungra then 18 kilometres to Beechmont. From Broadbeach, take the Nerang turn off from the Pacific Highway (exit 71) and follow the signs to Beechmont and Binna Burra. The final section of the 10 kilometres drive is very narrow.
