Free Entry - Entry Information
This rough track leads to Mt Barney Creek, which is located within Mount Barney National Park; part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. The track skirts the edge of the park before reaching a scenic rock pool along a gorge on Mt Barney Creek. Along the way, you will have to climb up eight moderate pinches and cross several mostly dry creek beds. The walk passes through open forest with a grasstree, casuarina and acacia understorey.
The creek is fringed with tall wet eucalyptus forest. If you have the time and the right equipment, this walk also makes an ideal overnight excursion as camping is permitted. The Lower Portals campsite is located just downstream of the creek crossing. No facilities are provided. When you reach the creek, cross to the other side. Turn right for the campsite or continue a few hundred metres upstream to the Lower Portals.
