The Lower Portals track leads to Mt Barney Creek, which is located within Mount Barney National Park; part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. This rough track skirts the edge of the park before reaching a scenic rock pool along a gorge on Mt Barney Creek. Along the way, you will have to climb up eight moderate pinches and cross several mostly dry creek beds. The walk passes through open forest with a grasstree, casuarina and acacia understorey. The creek is fringed with tall wet eucalyptus forest.... more
If you have the time and the right equipment, this walk also makes an ideal overnight excursion as bushcamping is permitted (providing permits have been obtained) at several sites located just downstream of the creek crossing. No facilities are provided. When you reach the creek, cross to the other side and turn right towards the campsites. See website for further details.... less
