Description
Historically significant, Dalrymple National Park contains the site of the former Dalrymple Township, established on the banks of the Burdekin River during the gold rush. Built in 1864, it was the first inland settlement to be surveyed in northern Australia. This once thriving township suffered major setbacks from flooding and the discovery of other goldfields. By 1901 little evidence of the settlement remained. Visit the Leichardt memorial marking the camping place of the European explorer, who in 1845 opened up the area. Today the sandy edges of the river provide a peaceful setting for camping and relaxing under big blue gums.

How To Get There:
42 kilometres north of Charters Towers. Access is via the Gregory Developmental Road (Lynd Highway). From the south, turn right on to an unsealed vehicle track at Fletcher Creek Crossing (camping area) and travel a further 2.5 kilometres along this track to the park entrance. The access road is unsealed and when dry, is accessible to all vehicle types with care. The road is closed during wet periods, which may occur between November and March. Certain areas of the former Dalrymple Township are privately owned. Public access is not allowed in these areas. Please observe and respect 'private property' signs.
