Description

In 1980 a public meeting was called with a view to the formation of a historical society to preserve records of the Kumbia area and to foster pride in future generations by providing visible proof of the experiences of our fore fathers. This was the beginning of the Kumbia and District Historical Society who together with the Kumbia Hall Committee has been very successful in preserving and presenting a large display of photographs, descriptions and artefacts relating to the early residents of Kumbia. This significant collection is housed in the Kumbia Federation Heritage Centre

There is also a range of memorabilia from the early 1900's. Kumbia and District Historical Society also maintain a large collection of historic photos of the district, many of which were the work of local freelance photographer Harold Mears. Harold settled in the area in 1912 at the age of 16 and later put his hobby of photography on a professional basis for the next 30 years. After his death in 1977 the society was successful in acquiring his entire collection of 13,000 negatives. Many are of the local district, people and events. Many of the photos have been printed off and are available for sale as postcards. To carry on from Harold Mears' era the Society has been given a collection of slides of local interest, these are the work of Mr Ernie Garrett and covers the 1950's to the 1970's.

Kumbia is a pretty village located 25 kilometers southwest of Kingaroy on the Bunya Highway, close to the foothills of the Bunya Mountains. The museum is located in the main street, Bell Street.
