WWI Memorial Journey - Mackay Day Trips
2 Days  / 120 Kilometres

Description

The Mackay district has many hidden treasures for the cultural tourist. The suggested day trips are in different directions and would be best undertaken individually from a Mackay base, with an option of continuing south to Rockhampton on the second day.

Start by travelling through the lush sugar plantations west of Mackay, detouring to visit historic Greenmount Homestead near Walkerston, passing the sugar mills of Pleystowe and Mirani and heading into the foothills of the Eungella National Park at Finch Hatton. There is an option to spend time enjoying the national parks before returning to Mackay.

... more

The second day might include some relaxation at one of the beaches near Sarina, before visiting cultural tourism attractions in Railway Square, just south of the war memorial on the main road in Sarina. The journey continues on through sugar plantations to Koumala.

Return to Mackay or travel south for about two hours through beef cattle country to Rockhampton.

WWI Memorial Journey - Mackay Day Trips Full Itinerary

Mackay to Finch Hatton (via Walkerston with option to extend to the Eungella Plateau)

Driving west from Mackay on the Eungella Road, take the Walkerston turn-off and visit Anzac Park under the water tower on the corner of Dutton and Bridge Streets, before continuing west to historic Greenmount Homestead. Return to Walkerston to re-join the highway. The old Pleystowe Sugar Mill which had a long association with Greenmount Homestead is on the left as you head to Finch Hatton, and Marian Sugar Mill will be on your right. The Mirani war memorial is in a park near the railway line.

Just before you reach Finch Hatton, you may choose to take 12 kilometre side trip to the Finch Hatton Gorge for a swim or walk in the tropical rainforest.

Arriving at Finch Hatton, it's hard to believe it was the third largest town in the Mackay district in the 1920s. The Criterion Hotel and the 1910 railway station are reminders of the hey-day of the town which developed around sugar production. The Finch Hatton War Memorial is in the main street diagonally opposite the station.

Choose another optional route to the Eungella Plateau. The Broken River Kiosk offers coffee and sandwiches and possibly platypus spotting in the river. Stay overnight or return to Mackay.

Mackay to Koumala (via Sarina)

Enjoy some time exploring the Mackay town-ship, its new harbour, marina development and beautiful beaches.

The Mackay Cenotaph was established on the south bank of the Pioneer River in 1929 and was relocated to Jubilee Park in 1945. Its new location is part of the civic precinct.

Visit the Mackay Historical Society Museum, in South Mackay, which holds artefacts from the coastal boat 'Brinawarr'. It transported men from F-Company (Mackay Infantry) to an anchorage at Flat Top Island in August 1915, en-route to Thursday Island to support the Australian contingent which had seized German New Guinea.

Travel south through the cane fields to Sarina and visit its war memorial, located in the main street's median strip.

Railway Square adjacent to the Plane Creek Sugar Mill on the south side of town has a number of co-located tourist attractions. The Sugar Shed demonstrates how sugar is grown, processed, milled and distilled in the unique miniature mill.

Drive south to Koumala, a town established during mid-1915 when the railway from Mackay opened. Its war memorial commemorates the service of locals during WWII.

Return to Mackay or continue south to Rockhampton.
