WWI Memorial Journey - Kangaroo Point to Dunwich Full Itinerary

Kangaroo Point to Tingalpa

An altar in the Warrior's Chapel at St Mary's Church, Kangaroo Point is dedicated to Queensland's first registered female doctor, Dr Lilian Cooper, who was awarded the order of St Sava by the Serbian government for her service in Macedonia during WWI.

Continue towards the city and keep left. Drive under the Story Bridge and turn back towards East Brisbane along Shafston Avenue. After Wellington Road, turn left into Park Avenue, parking near the City Cat Terminal. Wander through Mowbray Park to the War Memorial. The soldier statue stands on a pedestal of Helidon sandstone which originally held four large leaded marble plates bearing the names of 520 WWI enlistments from the East Brisbane area.

From East Brisbane, continue along Lytton Road and then veer left into Hawthorne Road and on to the Memorial Park at Bulimba. Take a break at the tree lined café strip on Oxford Street. The trees once had plaques commemorating locals' war service and the nearby grandstand was built as a memorial. Continue along Lytton and Wynnum Roads to Tingalpa. Take the left turn at the intersection of Wynnum and Manly roads, noting the unusual painted Tingalpa soldier statue in the traffic island.

Tingalpa to Dunwich

Travel along Wynnum Road to Preston Road and then on to Manly, where the soldier statue stands in Richard Russell Park. Relax over lunch at one of the many eating establishments further down Carlton Terrace. Then head back to Manly Road and east into Greencamp Road and drive to Cleveland.

The Cleveland War Memorial, a broken sandstone column with a carved rifle and laurel wreath, overlooks the intersection of Shore Street West and Passage Street. From Passage Street, turn left into Middle Street and head to the ferry terminal.

Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island is accessible by vehicular ferry or water taxi.

On arrival at Dunwich, the Dunwich Hall is on the right at the top of the hill on Ballow Street. It celebrated its centenary in 2013. Inside the hall is a WWI honour board donated by Thomas Welsby, businessman, politician and historian and Amity resident. The Dunwich war memorial is located in a park at the intersection of Parsons and Welsby Streets, a short walk from the ferry. Visit the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum in Welsby Street for more information. There is so much to see and do on Stradbroke, an overnight stay is recommended.
