WWI Memorial Journey - Ipswich to Graceville via Sandgate
2 Days  / 113 Kilometres

Description

The Soldier's Memorial Hall in Nicholas Street Ipswich is the starting point of this war memorials journey in the Ipswich to Brisbane corridor. This heritage-listed building was constructed in 1920-21, and a number of community organisations contributed to the construction including the Train Tea Girls, a group which met the troop trains during the war. A memorial window designed by William Bustard was installed in 1922, but was relocated to the new RSL Club in North Ipswich in 1979.

... more

In Ipswich's Central Park, beside the hall, visit a memorial to the 1998 re-enactment of the 1915 'Dungarees' March from Warwick to Brisbane. Two other memorials in the park were sculptured by local Tom Farrell, who also carved the eagle atop the American Memorial at Newstead Park in Brisbane.

Ipswich has numerous war memorials, indicating the immense impact the war had on this relatively small community. Others include two in the cemetery, one at the North Ipswich Railway Workshops, Lobley Park in Churchill, Leichhardt Park in Leichhardt, and Baines Park in Limestone Street.

Drive east out of town and visit memorials in Booval and Ebbw Vale, before heading to Oxley.

The Oxley memorial commemorates soldiers from the Centenary suburbs such as Jindalee and Sinnamon Park, when it was a farming area.

The journey continues to Yeronga Memorial Park before heading into the Brisbane Central Business District to the most iconic WWI Memorial, the Shrine of Remembrance in Anzac Square. Travel on to picturesque Newstead Park, with its many WWII memorials, then to Pinkenba where many soldiers embarked on their overseas service in the Boer War and WWI.

Travel north to the seaside suburb of Sandgate, where the heritage buildings allow you to appreciate old Sandgate town as it was during WWI, prior to its 1925 amalgamation into the city of Greater Brisbane.

Head back through some of Brisbane's northern suburbs and visit a memorial avenue of trees at Kalinga, memorial monuments at Windsor and Paddington, and memorial parks at Toowong and Graceville.

WWI Memorial Journey - Ipswich to Graceville via Sandgate Full Itinerary

Ipswich to Yeronga

From the Soldier's Memorial Hall in central Ipswich, travel 3.5 kilometres east to Cameron Park at Booval. This outstanding soldier statue memorial was funded by the community of the eastern suburbs of Ipswich, including Booval, Silkstone, Newtown and Raceview. Travel 4.5 kilometres to the east to the Ebbw Vale Memorial, located adjacent to the Australian Football Club. It was originally located on the opposite side of the road, dedicated in 1918 and relocated in 1972.

Continue east and join the Ipswich Motorway. Travel for about 19 kilometres to the Oxley Road turn-off. The Oxley Soldier Statue Memorial is in a park adjacent to Oxley Hotel.

Return to the Ipswich Motorway and travel on towards Brisbane. Passing through Rocklea, continue on Ipswich Road until you reach School Road Yeronga. The Yeronga Memorial Park is a great location for a break in the journey. It has a memorial avenue of trees, memorial gates and war memorial, as well as picnic shelters, playground equipment and interpretive signage about the cultural heritage of the park. The original landscape design has been attributed to Harry Moore, Brisbane City Council Parks Superintendent from 1912-1939. The Yeronga Swimming Pool and Bowls Club are co-located with the park.

Yeronga to Newstead

From Yeronga take Ipswich Road into South Bank. Stop for a coffee and wander past the remnant abutment of the third Victoria Bridge to cross the Brisbane River at this point. A memorial on the sandstone arch laments the loss of an 11 year old newspaper seller, Hector Vasyli, who was hit by a car during a home-coming parade in 1918. He was known for his kindness to returned soldiers and for his regular participation in these parades.

You may like to walk across the Victoria Bridge, through the mall and down to the General Post Office, where Brisbane's first Anzac Day parade was held in 1916. Traverse Post Office Square to Anzac Square where the Eternal Flame burns in the Shrine of Remembrance. If you have chosen to drive, parking is available at Post Office Square.

Continue through the city to Newstead House and Park. Newstead Park originally had a WWI trophy cannon, but this was replaced by the American Memorial which is now a feature of the park. During the years of WWI, Newstead House was acquired by the Brisbane City Council. Parks Manager Harry Moore lived here and redesigned the gardens.

Newstead to Sandgate

Continue on from Breakfast Creek, along Kingsford Smith Drive and on to Eagle Farm Road to Pinkenba. This area remains semi-industrial as it has been for over a century. The war memorial is located on a corner allotment at the intersection of McBride and Eagle Farm roads. The wharves at Pinkenba became the embarkation point for soldiers of the Australian Light Horse, Artillery and Infantry, with over 200 men and their horses departing between 23 and 25 September 1914. The Queensland contingent for the Boer War had also embarked from Pinkenba Wharf in 1899.

Drive back towards the city and enter the Southern Cross Motorway from Kingsford Smith Drive and head north towards the Sunshine Coast. Travel for about 10 kilometres, take the Depot Road exit and head to Sandgate. The war memorial is situated in a park in the centre of the old town of Sandgate, across from the beautiful town hall. Enjoy lunch at one of the local cafes here or take a short detour through to the waterfront and enjoy some fish and chips by the sea.

Sandgate to Windsor

Take Sandgate Road back towards the city. Turn right into Rode Road, left into Edinburgh Castle Road and left into Shaw Road. Cross the creek and turn left into Henry Street, and the second left into Bertha Street, arriving at Kalinga Park. Enjoy a walk along Digger's Drive, defined by the avenue of trees planted by returned servicemen.

Drive south along Shaw Road to Lutwyche Road. After passing through Lutwyche shopping centre, ensure you remain in the left lane for the next kilometre. When you reach the intersection with the historic Sub-Station and the old Windsor Town Council on the right; take the Roblane Street exit to the left and enter the first side street on the left, Thondles Street, to park. Cross at the pedestrian lights to the Windsor War Memorial. It was built on the site of the first school in the district. Enjoy the vista of the surrounding suburbs from the vantage point on the crest of the hill. The Windsor State School towers are visible to the west. It was built during the early years of WWI.

Windsor to Graceville

Continue south along Lutwyche and Bowen Bridge roads, past the Royal Brisbane Hospital and turn right at the Old Museum. Follow Gregory Terrace past Brisbane (Boys) Grammar School. Catch a glimpse of the hexagonal gothic War Memorial Library as you turn into College Road.

Follow Musgrave Road until you reach Enoggera Terrace. Turn left and follow the road for about 600 metres until you reach Ithaca War Memorial Park, just before the old fire station in Paddington. This is Brisbane's only memorial clock. Its mechanism was originally driven by a master clock in the fire station.

Travel west on Latrobe Terrace to Boundary Road, and head south to the Toowong roundabout, heading to Sylvan Road and down to Toowong Memorial Park. Enter through the memorial gates, and climb the hill to the sandstone memorial column flanked by symbolic horse trough, evoking memories of the Australian Light Horse.

Drive south on Jephson Street to join Moggill Road and cross Indooroopilly Bridge to Graceville, where the Memorial Park hosts a range of WWI memorials including a granite memorial, an avenue of trees and a grandstand. Enjoy afternoon tea at one of the Oxley Road cafes before continuing on to the Ipswich Motorway.
