Admission Costs and Entry Information
Tyrconnell is a unique and unforgettable experience, located just 150 kilometres west of Cairns and 34 kilometres north of Dimbulah (last 26 kilometres is gazetted unsealed road) on the Hodgkinson Goldfield. The now abandoned goldfield was once home to 10,000 people and was the reason for the establishment of Port Douglas and Cairns.
Tyrconnell is a 130 year old heritage-listed gold mine situated amongst tree-studded hills. It boasts an authentic pioneer atmosphere, several original buildings, an operational ten-head stamping battery and magnificent views.
The business is family run, with a focus on hospitality. Andy and Cate (and their three boys) have lived at Tyrconnell for 14 years, gradually restoring the site. Andy also once mined for gold at Tyrconnell and is able to share his experiences. Activities include tours of the mine site and pioneer cemetery, gold panning (conditions apply), bush-walking, star-gazing, bird-watching and swimming in the dam. Mt. Mulligan, an 18 kilometre long, 300 metre high escarpment, is highly recommended for a day trip.
Many guests cite Tyrconnell as the highlight of their trip, for its combination of uniqueness, hospitality and vast, unspoilt nature. Visit by arrangement only.
