Description
John Flynn Place Museum and Art Gallery in Cloncurry commemorates the work of John Flynn and the beginnings of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The museum is a three story venue which also celebrates the contribution from Fred McKay and Alfred Traeger.
It was at Cloncurry that the Royal Flying Doctor Service was established in 1928. Flynn's choice of Cloncurry was based on its proximity to the mining camps and scattered pastoralists, all of whom were poorly served by any kind of medical services.
... moreJohn Flynn Place houses an excellent overview of the Flynn legacy. The museum's display moves progressively from an image of outback conditions at the turn of the century to the history of Flynn himself. It includes some interesting personal memorabilia and explanations of how the whole Flying Doctor system worked in the early days.
The Radio Galley is a tribute to amazing work of Alfred Traeger, the inventive genius who gave a voice to Outback Australia, through the pedal radio. A valuable art collection is on display in the Fred McKay Art Gallery, which displays winners of the Ernest Henry Art Show and temporary exhibitions.

Coming from Mount Isa / Normanton: Once in Cloncurry heading along the Highway (Ramsay Street), turn Left into King Street, and then Right into Daintree Street (second street along).
Coming from Julia Creek / Winton: Once in Cloncurry heading along the Highway (Ramsay Street), turn Right into King Street, and then Right into Daintree Street (second street along).

The 'Curry', as it is affectionately known by locals, is 122 kilometres east of Mt Isa and 400 kilometres south of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
