Other Information

How To Get There:
Chillagoe is 215 kilometres, or 3 hours drive west of Cairns via Mareeba and Dimbulah on the Burke Developmental Road on the northern end of the Atherton Tableland. The road is sealed to Almaden. Over the final 32 kilometres of road there are both sealed and unsealed sections. Chillagoe can also be accessed via Herberton from the southern end of the Atherton Tableland, although there are more unsealed sections along this route. Conventional vehicle access is possible in dry weather but roads may be impassable in the summer wet season. Another route to Chillagoe leads from Undara National Park. From Undara drive west along the Gulf Developmental Road for 30 kilometres towards Mount Surprise, then follow the narrow unsealed Ootaan Road for 140 kilometres to the junction with the Bourke Developmental Road, near Almaden. This route takes about three hours and four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended.

Fees apply to ranger-guided cave tours—adults AUD23.00, children AUD11.50 (4-14 years), family AUD57.50 (two adults and two children), concession AUD18.50 and students AUD5.00 each. Prices are valid until 1 April 2013. Tickets must be purchased in advance from The Hub in the town centre. During the peak season, The Hub is open 0800 to 1700 weekdays and 0800 to 1530 weekends. During the off peak season, The Hub is only open from 0800 to 1430 on Tuesdays, Thursday and weekends.

There are two seasons in the Chillagoe area—the wet season from December to the end of March, and the dry season from April until November. The mean annual rainfall is 850 millimetres. Summer (wet season) temperatures usually range between 25 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius. October and November can be very hot and dry while the winter months from May until August can be cool at night. Thunderstorms and rain depressions at the end of November usually herald the approaching wet season.
