Description

The first Porcupine Gorge Challenge was held in 2001 in conjunction with the Centenary of Federation celebrations. This event was not only to challenge serious competitors but to give the opportunity for locals and adjoining communities to enjoy such a wonderful natural attraction, whilst walking the gorge with friends. The Gorge Lookout is 63 kilometres north of Hughenden and the Pyramid Lookout, campground and gorge walk are another 11 kilometres further north. The unsealed Kennedy Development Road from Hughenden to Lyndhurst runs parallel to the western edge of the gorge and, when dry, is accessible to all vehicle types with care. However, travellers should expect to encounter bulldust, corrugations, exposed rocks, creek crossings, other vehicles, native wildlife, cattle and road trains. After storms, the road may be temporarily closed or inaccessible to conventional vehicles and caravans. Please check road conditions at the Flinders Discovery Centre before travelling to Porcupine Gorge.
