The 12 Mile as it has been known since its heyday, is where you can discover a magnificent example of 19th century craftsmanship. Thousands upon thousands of naturally formed flagstones, carefully sorted and then meticulously placed together to form a leak-proof reservoir to retain water so precious to the existence of everything.
... moreThe stone-pitched overshot is thought to have been constructed in the 1890s when the 12 Mile dam was built. It is located along the stock route between Ilfracombe and Isisford. Essentially a watering stop and Cobb & Co change station, the 12 Mile was also the site of the Royal Mail Hotel which operated between 1893 and around 1916.
In the vicinity are shaded picnic tables, plenty of parking/camping grounds, and a self-guided map is available at the Wellshot Centre in Ilfracombe. Please, take only photos and leave only footprints.
