Lava Tubes to Lawn Hill

Walking in Boodjamulla National Park

Outback North Queensland is a land of rocky red ridges, abundant wetlands, lush gorges, rippling grasslands and country towns. Join a 16 day journey from Cairns to the Gulf of Carpentaria, south to Mt Isa and back to the coast at Townsville. Local guides introduce the fascinating world of Undara Volcanic National Park as they explore the world's longest single vent lava flow. They then board the historic Gulflander (the "old tin hare") for the train ride from Croydon to Normanton. Further north is Karumba, the Gulf of Carpentaria's major fishing port. A sunset cruise on the Norman River is a chance to spot saltwater crocodiles and migratory birds among the mangroves. Boodjamulla National Park features Lawn Hill Gorge, palm-fringed waterholes and sheer sandstone walls. Canoe the waterways, swim in rock pools and walk to viewing points and Aboriginal rock art. Visit the Riversleigh Fossils Centre in Mt Isa and take an optional guided tour of one of the world's largest underground mines. At the John Flynn museum in Cloncurry, experience the history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. In the small town of Richmond, they search for dinosaur fossils at the renowned marine fossil museum, Kronosaurus Korner.

Australia's Green Cauldron

Brindle Creek walk

The essence of the rainbow region of Northern New South Wales is an eclectic mix of interesting walks, creative country towns and a relaxed ambience at every turn. This six day tour explores the national parks around Mt Warning while based in one place - a valley homestead near the town of Uki. Stretching along the western rim of the Tweed Caldera, the Border Ranges National Park is accessed via the Tweed Range Road and they enjoy a series of short walks near Brindle Creek. Nearby, the Tweed Pinnacle lookout gives you a bird's eye view of the Tweed Caldera, a 23 million year old shield volcano. On the southern side of the caldera, the Nightcap Ranges are a walker's paradise and part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area. They walk sections of the Historic Nightcap Track which leads to hidden waterfalls, palm valleys, misty lookouts and lush rainforest. Part of the original trail was used by travellers and postal workers between the Richmond and Tweed in the late 1800s. Their last walk leads to a dramatic lookout over Minyon Falls. Their journey will include brief visits to the local villages of Uki, Nimbin and Mullumbimby.
