02 February
The Hell of the West is a long course Triathlon consisting of a two kilometre swim in the Macintyre River, an 80 kilometre ""dead flat"" cycle west out the Barwon Highway towards St George and a 20 kilometre run which consists of three loops.
The event is described as the ""toughest triathlon in Queensland"". Temperatures of up to 38 degrees can be expected at this time of year and this heat is what the athletes love. Many ironmen use the triathlon as part of their training sessions. However many use it as their first triathlon also and many compete as part of a team.
