Even die-hard Gold Coast fans may not realise this but there is an official section of the coast known as the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of pathways which connects The Spit at the north to Point Danger in the south.
This innovative initiative is actually a series of sections which range up to four kilometres long and are popular with walkers and cyclists. There's accessible viewing platforms for people with disabilities and the entire route is serviced by the local Surfside Buses. With salt in your hair enjoy blue ocean waves, golden sandy beaches and green dunes.
You'll encounter birds, dolphins, fish and whales along this award-winning route popular with those who like to swim, fish, sail and sunbake. There's also plenty of public facilities such as barbecues and toilets along the way. So take your time, breathe, relax and enjoy as you connect the dots between the Gold Coast Seaway and Coolangatta.
Children are welcome. There are high quality playgrounds for children of all ages and abilities at regular intervals along the Gold Coast Oceanway. Lifeguards patrol flagged swimming areas along the Oceanway. There are sheltered areas suitable for swimming with younger children at the Broadwater, Currumbin and Tallebudgera Estuary and the more protected ocean beaches at Greenmount, Rainbow Bay and Burleigh.
There is access for guests with a disability. The Gold Coast Oceanway won the 2005 Queensland Award for services for people with a disability. The pavements provide high quality access for people of all abilities. There are disability viewing platforms allowing access over the sand for less mobile people. There are regular toilets and car parking for people with a disability along the Oceanway.
Yes. Pets are allowed. Dogs are welcome on a leash along all of the Gold Coast Oceanway (there is a short diversion inland around the Burleigh National Park area which is off limits to dogs). There are some off-leash areas for dogs along the Oceanway including sandy beaches at Currumbin and The Spit.
The 36 kilometres Gold Coast Oceanway is located along the mainland beachfront of Gold Coast City in Queensland, Australia. The Oceanway can be enjoyed by pedestrians or cyclists starting at any point and travelling in either direction. There is public transport to many points along the Gold Coast Oceanway visit Trans Info for more information.
A tourist map showing the major locations along the Gold Coast Oceanway is also available.
Check out the Gold Coast events calendar for major events including wintersun, schoolies, Australian Surf lifesaving championships, surfing events and the Indy carnival. The Gold Coast Oceanway will remain open during major events, but travel times may be affected by larger crowds. While many urban sections of the Oceanway are well lit for usage after dark, suburban areas have lower levels of lighting and there is no lighting provided in non-urban sections including Currumbin, Burleigh National Park and the Spit. Sections of the Oceanway near coastal cliffs may close during periods of heavy rain, but inland diversions will be in place.
