Cooloola

A wonderful blend of beaches, waterways, rural hinterland, and heritage, Cooloola offers several unique holiday destinations within one location.

  • Hand feed dolphins at Tin Can Bay - one of the few places you can hand feed the rare Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins. This resident family of dolphins has been interacting with the locals and visitors for more than 30 years. Feeding takes place at 8am near the boat ramp at Norman Point in Tin Can Bay.

  • Ride the Valley Rattler Steam Train - Ride the restored 1923 C17 steam train from Gympie through the scenic Mary Valley stopping along the way at the fully restored stations of Dagun, Amamoor, Kandanga and Imbil where you can browse the local art and craft markets. www.thevalleyrattler.com

  • Rainbow serene or extreme - watching the whales sail by or surfing the break at Double Island Point, Rainbow has something for everyone. Choose four-wheel driving and camping on the beach or watching the sunset over Fraser Island from your penthouse deck, Rainbow has it all.

  • Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum - "the town that saved Queensland" is Gympie's greatest claim to fame coined after the discovery of Gold in 1867 helped save the young fledgling State from bankruptcy. The Museum is an impressive tribute to the region's golden past and is a must visit for any history or nostalgia buff.

  • Houseboat holiday in the Great Sandy Strait - with internationally recognised wetlands, the Strait between Fraser Island and the mainland is an eco-paradise. From Tin Can Bay you can hire a houseboat or a catamaran and spend as long as you like exploring the marvels of the Strait. Dugongs, turtles, playful dolphins and the thousands of migrating trans-equatorial shorebirds make this the perfect nature based getaway. www.greatsandystrait.com.au.

  • Fishing and picnicking at Lake Borumba - 11km from Imbil, the lake is home to Golden Perch, Australian Bass, and Saratoga. Water skiing and recreational boating are also very popular on the lake, with an adjacent camping area this is a great family holiday destination
