From on top a sandstone outcrop in the Expedition National Park, you feel like the only human for miles around. The sweeping views over hills, valleys and gorges take in one of Queensland’s untouched wilderness areas. And the spectacle at sunset will take your breath away.
The Western Downs is also home to Southwood National Park and Isla Gorge National Park, offering more great views, spectacular lakes and waterholes, and some excellent opportunities for bird watching. Be on the lookout for the rare black cockatoo, wedge-tailed eagle or peregrine falcon. You may even see a sugarglider, wallaby, brush-tail possum, goanna or echidna on a walk along one of the many picturesque bush tracks.
A little closer to civilization is the Myall Park Botanic Garden at Glenmorgan. Founded in the 1950s, this fascinating garden is home to some of the rarest arid and semi-arid native plants in Australia.
