Natural Encounters

At Cape Hillsborough, just north of Mackay, the local kangaroo population regularly takes evening strolls along the beach. After all, it’s the perfect time of day for exercise and if you’re lucky, they might let you get close enough to take a picture. At Cape Hillsborough you can also explore the rock pools at low tide and discover the fascinating creatures that live within.

Not far away is the mist-shrouded Eungella National Park, a vast rainforest area dissected by spectacular gorges. It boasts breath-taking views across the Pioneer Valley and many unusual plants and animals. From the specially constructed platform at Broken River you might be fortunate enough to spy the platypus, eels and turtles that call the river home. Spotlighting at night will reveal tawny frogmouths, sugar gliders and brushtail possums in this unique part of the country.

Just down the road from Eungella lies Finch Hatton Gorge, a secluded pocket of rainforest featuring waterfalls and deep clear water rock pools. During the summer months these rock pools attract locals and visitors alike seeking to cool down in their clear, refreshing waters.
