Fraser Island's lakes, beaches and wildlife

Experience Fraser Island

World Heritage listed Fraser Island is nature at its awe-inspiring best, gathering together a remarkable range of environments. Drive along the highway of sand on the ocean beaches or explore the sandy tracks that lead through thick forest to secret lakes, hidden in subtropical rainforest, their glassy surfaces reflecting the vegetation and deep blue sky.

Fraser Island is a unique natural environment that has been formed over 800,000 years. It is the largest sand island in the world and one of the rare places where towering subtropical rainforest grows in the sand.

Fraser Island's abundant pristine freshwater lakes and crystal clear creeks are great spots to view flora and fauna and also provide a welcome oasis for hot summer days. Scenic 4WD circuits and walking tracks, including sections of the Great Walk, take in some of the largest lakes including McKenzie, Birrabeen, Benaroon, Boomanjin and the spectacular Lake Wabby.

The Aboriginal tribes that once lived here named the island "K'gari" after an enchanting legend that describes the island as paradise. You can discover some of that paradise with several of the eco-tour operators departing from Hervey Bay or by spending a few days in one of the island's resorts.
