Description
Fitzroy Island National Park is rugged and diverse with granite outcrops, open woodlands, rainforest, mangroves and coral beaches. This continental island was connected to the mainland before sea levels rose. The fringing reefs and coral beaches are protected as part of the Great Barrier Reef and Great Barrier Reef Coast marine parks.
The summit track leads to the summit of Fitzroy Island (269 metres) and amazing views of the island, reefs and mainland.

From the resort, the trail begins on an old vehicle track on the left as you walk off the jetty. The tracks are clearly marked.

Walk Hints
Wear a hat and sunscreen and take drinking water when walking as parts of this track are very exposed. Walk in the cooler months.
Be careful on the slippery and uneven track surfaces, especially when wet. Be prepared for wet weather and strong winds if visiting during February and March.

The best time visit the Fitzroy Island summit track is during the dry season, from May to October is the best time to visit. The track features: granite outcrops, open woodlands, rainforest, mangroves, migratory birds and coral beaches.
Leading from the lighthouse road this track winds up through open woodland to the summit of the island (269 metres). Pause among the slabs of granite and windswept casuarinas to take in magnificent views over the island, surrounding reefs and mainland.
The track is one kilometre long, with a moderate degree of difficulty which should take approximately one hour to complete. Always keep to the tracks and observe signs carefully to avoid becoming lost. Avoid the sun in the middle of the day to prevent sunburn and heat exhaustion. Use sunscreen and always carry drinking water. Wear sturdy footwear to protect your feet and legs. Take care on the uneven track surfaces and near steep drop-offs from the road's edge.

Fitzroy Island is a 45 minute ferry trip from Cairns.
