Description

Blue Arrow Circuit, Mount Whitfield National Park. This walk climbs mainly through rainforest to 300 metres altitude, on a path that is sometimes steep and narrow and requires a reasonable standard of fitness. About half way round the circuit is an optional 400 metre side track to the summit of Mount Lumley Hill at 325 metres in altitude. From the lookout at the top you get fine views along the coast to the north of Cairns.

How To Get There

Mt Whitfield is next to the Flecker Gardens, less than five kilometres north of the Cairns city centre. Head north along Sheridan Street (Captain Cook Highway) and turn left into Collins Avenue. The park is signposted. There are regular bus services.

Access is from the car park on Collins Avenue, next to the Flecker Gardens, less than five kilometres from Cairns city centre. To access the Blue Arrow circuit, follow the Red Arrow circuit from the car park and, at the top of the walk, take the 600 metre sidetrack to the Blue Arrow circuit.

Weather

During the wet season, from December to April, there are frequent, heavy downpours. Maximum temperatures through the wet season generally range from 27 to 33 degrees Celsius, with high humidity. The cooler, drier months, from May to September, are the best time for walking. The weather is pleasantly warm during this time, with reduced humidity and maximum temperatures averaging 26 degrees Celsius.
