Description
Within Carnarvon National Park, Tombs Circuit walking tracks lead from the orientation area to unusual rock pillars and an Aboriginal art site. The track passes the Chimneys, three pillars of rock that have been separated from the narrow end of a small bluff of Precipice Sandstone, where water has eroded down vertical fractures. Beyond the Maranoa River the sandstone bluff known as The Tombs shelters more than 400 stencilled Aboriginal motifs.
... moreThe Tombs once contained burial chambers for local Aboriginal people. Take a close look at the rock art from a boardwalk with seats. Continue along the circuit to the Looking Glass, where wind has eroded a cave right through an isolated sandstone pillar standing by the Maranoa River. The Park is also noted for its birdwatching opportunities with at least 172 species recorded.

When visiting rock art at The Tombs, please remember that the art is very fragile and can be permanently damaged by touching. Dust kicked up by visitors can also damage the art, as fine dust particles stick to the rock surface, covering the stencils. Please enjoy a close look at the rock art while remaining on the boardwalks, which have been built to prevent damage to the rock art.
Be prepared for extreme temperatures at Mt Moffatt. In winter, temperatures may fall well below zero, while in summer they may reach more than 30 degrees Celsius. Storms are frequent in summer.

April to October is the best time to visit, to avoid temperature extremes in summer.

General Comments
The Tombs Circuit features aboriginal rock art, dramatic landscapes, unique sandstone formations, abundant birdlife, colourful woodlands and wildflowers. The circuit is 5.8 kilometres long with a moderate degree of difficulty which should take approximately three hours to complete. When visiting rock art at The Tombs, please remember that the art is very fragile and can be permanently damaged by touching. Dust kicked up by visitors can also damage the art, as fine dust particles stick to the rock surface, covering the stencils.
How To Get There
Mt Moffatt is 220 kilometres north of Mitchell via Womblebank Station. From Injune, Mt Moffat is 160 kilometres north-west via Womblebank Station or Westgrove Station. The road from Womblebank is unsealed and can become impassable after rain.
