Description

These magical, award-winning tours with Aboriginal Elder Wilfred (Willie) Gordon, are now listed as one of Australia's Ultimate Must-Do Experiences. Willie is the appointed story-keeper of the Nugal-warra people, and he takes guests to his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, explaining how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and will have you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all.

Great Emu Tour (ex-Cooktown)

Guurrbi Tours

Your tour begins from your Cooktown accommodation, where Nugal-warra Elder and story-keeper, Willie Gordon, meets you for your air-conditioned drive to the rock art sites - a journey of about 40 minutes. On the way you will learn some of the Aboriginal history and stories about the landscape you are passing through.

Once at the entrance of the sites you continue with Willie on foot to visit three rock art sites, including the Rainbow Serpent and Great Emu Caves. At each site Willie explains the significance of the paintings and the stories behind the art, giving guests a unique insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality.

The tour is suitable for most ages: there is a short climb to one of the sites, but overall very little walking is involved. Water is provided.

If you would rather meet Willie at the entrance to the rock art sites, a self-drive tour option is available.

Rainbow Serpent Tour (ex-Cooktown)

Rock art with Aboriginal Elder Willie Gordon

Your tour begins from your Cooktown accommodation, where Nugal-warra Elder and story-keeper, Willie Gordon, meets you for your air-conditioned drive to the rock art sites - a journey of about 40 minutes. On the way you will learn some of the Aboriginal history and stories about the landscape you are passing through.

Once at the entrance of the sites you continue with Willie on foot to visit six rock art sites, including the Rainbow Serpent cave and an ancestral Birth Site where Willie's grandfather was born. At each of the sites Willie shares the spiritual meanings and stories behind the paintings, and along the way you'll learn about the bush foods and medicines in the country you're walking through.

The tour includes an estimated 30 minute bush walk on uneven terrain. There are short climbs to two of the sites, but generally the terrain is not difficult. The tour is not suitable for those with difficulty walking, climbing and/or managing steps.

Water is provided. Cameras are welcome. Closed footwear must be worn!

If you would prefer to meet Willie at the entrance to the rock art sites, a self-drive tour option is available.
