Dugongs live in the northern waters of Australia and can be found right along the Queensland coast. Moreton Bay has a particularly good supply of the sea grass needed in the dugong diet.
They are a protected species and one of the few mammals of the ocean. Legend has it that dugongs started the original mermaid myths, with sailors mistaking them for humans when seen from a distance.
