Torres Strait Islands

Description

The Torres Strait Islands lie north of Tropical North Queensland's Cape York Peninsula. Comprised of 274 small islands (17 are inhabited), the Torres Strait Islands are located in the waterway that separates Australia from the island nation of Papua New Guinea.

Thursday and Horn Island are the most well-known of the Torres Strait Islands. Activities on the islands are quite traditional, with fishing being the major economic source.

To travel to the remote islands (other than Thursday and Horn Islands), you must get permission from the Torres Strait Regional Authority.
