From Sydney
From Sydney there are two major routes, the Pacific Coast Touring Route or New England Highway, which begins at Newcastle. The Pacific Coast Touring Route is a shorter distance, but both journeys will take about the same time. Try going up one way and returning along the other.
From Melbourne
From Melbourne the Newell Highway offers a direct route to South-East Queensland with easy access to Central Queensland via Highways 39 or 17. Dubbo, home of the Western Plains Zoo, marks the half way point to the Queensland border. If you wish to travel to Queensland's Outback, turn left at Dubbo, then head north on the Mitchell Highway, which will take you to the border at Barringun and the start of the Matilda Highway. An alternative route to Queensland is via the Castlereagh Highway which will lead you through the middle of the state along the Great Inland Way to Cairns.
From Adelaide
From Adelaide travel along the Barrier Highway through Broken Hill to Nyngan where you can head north along the Mitchell Highway to Queensland's Outback or continue through to Gilgandra. At Gilgandra you can take the Castlereagh Highway or the Newell Highway leading you to South-East Queensland. Alternatively follow the Sturt Highway to Narrandera and then the Newell Highway.
From Darwin
From Darwin you have two options, the fully sealed road from Darwin to Tennant Creek and across to Mount Isa on the Overlanders Way or take the adventure drive and follow the Savannah Way from Daly Waters to Normanton on some unsealed roads.
