At Theodore, The Junction, alongside the Dawson River is another top free camping and fishing locality. Fringed with weeping callistemons and towering palms, the Dawson is gaining a reputation as one of Queensland's premier inland fisheries. Catches include Barramundi, Yellow-Belly, Black Bream, Saratoga, Spangled Perch and Sleepy Cod.
Further up the river at Moura and Baralaba, the river's sweeping banks and large flat camping grounds makes these a worthy stopping point for a night or two.
The Theodore Hotel is the only Co-operative hotel operating in Queensland and one of only two in Australia.
Banana, on the junction of the Leichhardt and Dawson Highways at first appears an odd name for a town. However, the answer is simple and it has nothing to do with the fruit of the same name. The story goes that in the 1850's Moses Wafer owned a yellow bullock called Banana - an expert at rounding up Scrubbers (unbranded wild cattle). On his death in a gully, the unnamed gully took on the bullock's name, as did the station, town and then the shire.
Through fields of sunflowers splashing the countryside a glowing yellow, the township of Dululu is one of those cute Queenslander style towns worthy of a visit - make sure you check out the pub! Making it easier for travellers, there's camping facilities, picnic tables and BBQ's to guarantee your stay is as hassle-free as possible.
