Test the city's "Beef Capital of Australia" reputation by enjoying a succulent steak at one of the many charming country pubs and take time to wander the art gallery, museums and 130 year-old Botanic Gardens. Drive to Mt Archer Environmental Park for panoramic city views and visit the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, 6km out of town, for an insight to our Indigenous history.
Head 23km north of the city to the Capricorn Caves and wind through a labyrinth of chambers in the unique above-ground limestone caves or visit nearby Mt Etna Caves National Park to investigate the most recent dig for fossils.
Yeppoon and the adventures of the Capricorn Coast are just 30 minutes drive away. The seaside town acts as a gateway to unspoilt beaches and tropical islands of the Keppel Islands known for their white sand, clear tropical waters, fringing reefs and colourful array of fish life. For 4WD enthusiasts Byfield National Park and Conservation Park 70km northeast of Rocky boasts towering sand dunes, stunning scenery and rugged granite pinnacles.
The history of Rockhampton's wealth built on gold rushes and cattle empires can still be experienced in nearby towns of Gracemere and Mount Morgan. Get in amongst the action of a cattle auction at the Gracemere Saleyards Complex 11km west of Rockhampton or dig up some history on our early pioneers. Tour the old Mount Morgan gold mine, 40km southwest of Rockhampton and be taken back millions of years to a dinosaur footprint on the ceiling of a clay cavern.
