Snorkelling

What about snorkelling?
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most accessible reefs in the world and offers excellent snorkelling. Some of the most spectacular marine life can be found in the first few metres of water. Generally snorkelling on the reef is quite easy with people of all ages taking the plunge. Operators will teach you the basic skills of snorkelling on the boat en route to the site and you can refine them when you take to the water. For more detailed information, visit the snorkelling pages on this website.

What equipment do I need for Snorkelling?
Most operators include the hire of snorkelling equipment (masks, snorkels and fins) as part of your trip. Buoyancy vests or devices can be provided for poor swimmers. We also recommend you wear some form of protection against the sun and abrasions. Lycra and wet-suits are available for hire from the marine tour operator.

Are there companies that cater for mobility-impaired snorkellers?
Yes. Some companies have the facilities to cater for mobility impairments, and details of this can generally be found in their brochures or on their websites.
