West downs QLD experience activity wine

Lifestyle

With its dry climate and well-drained soil, the Western Downs is ideal for growing grape varieties that produce a very tasty drop! Treat yourself to a tipple with a visit to Queensland’s oldest winery. Along the way, drop into one of several more recent vineyards for a tour, tastings or delicious lunch in an alfresco garden cafĂ©.

And when it comes to lunch, you won’t get a heartier meal, than at one of the Western Down’s old-fashioned country pubs. The locals are particularly fond of the Moonie River watering hole where beer and rum were brewed on site, long before the days of Bundaberg Rum and XXXX. It’s Queensland’s oldest pub and still sits at its original site.

Like most country regions, the Western Downs has its share of festivals and celebrations, both quirky and traditional. Chinchilla celebrates the magnificence of the melon. For Tara, it’s a toast to the camel. Gourmets should get down to Goondiwindi, and for a rip-roaring good time, Roma is festival capital of the west!
