The ""Hell of the West"" began life in 1989 and is now established as the premier long course triathlon in Queensland. The race has been advertised as ""THE TOUGHEST TRIATHLON IN QUEENSLAND"" and has long been regarded as one of the top three events of its type in Australia and as one of the most unique triathlon experiences around.
Many of our competitors have used the ""Hell of the West"" as a warm up race for Ironman events, as the tough course and conditions really test the skills of our athletes. However, Goondiwindi is not just for the super fit, with a third of our field aged over 45yrs and 70-80 teams competing each year. The actual triathlon today consists of a two kilometeres swim leg, 80km cycle leg and a 20km run leg. There are team and individual competitors with both male and female divisions of all age groups.
