Description

This walk extends beyond the Great Northern Mines Walk, following the trail up to the Herberton Firetrail.

At the top of the steep trail there is a turn to the left to a shorter return path (known as the Magazine Escape Trail). Continue past this turnoff onto the Mount Ida firetrail.

There are three distinct steep climbs and decents across the three peaks of Mount Ida. Many mineshafts are evident and spectacular views across Herberton and the neighbouring valleys will be seen.

Reaching the peak of Mount Ida, notice the emergence of the mountain heath vegetation. Continue to follow the firetrail, which will take to you Mowbray Road, returning you to the township.

Walk Hints

Mount Ida trail is steep and care will need to be taken with loose surfaces. Please do not attempt to enter any mines or tunnels.

Take drinking water and wear a hat and sunscreen in this tropcical environment.

During the wet season, high rainfalls can cause washouts. In the dry season, tracks may be closed due to hire fire danger.

The trail is 5.7 kilometres long, has a hard degree of difficulty and will take approximately two and a half hours to complete.
Mount Ida trail is steep and care will need to be taken with loose surfaces. Please do not attempt to enter any mines or tunnels. Take drinking water and wear a hat and sunscreen in this tropcical environment. During the wet season, high rainfalls will make the trail inpassable.

How To Get There:
Herberton is one and a half hours west of Cairns via Gordonvale and Atherton and well signposted.
