Atherton Tablelands

Popularly known as the “food bowl of the tropics”, the Atherton Tablelands is a haven for gourmet travellers, pleasure seekers and coffee connoisseurs.

A 45 minute drive west of Cairns, this highland paradise offers a soothing escape from the tropical heat during the warmer months.

Visit Australia’s oldest coffee plantation, Skybury, or head further out to Milla Millaa to sample some of the best cheeses and yoghurt the region has to offer.

Nestled between the stops on the food trail you will find day spas and rainforest retreats, wildlife experiences and beautiful waterfalls.

The waterfall circuit starts near Millaa Millaa off Palmerston Highway and includes Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls.

Watch out for platypuses and elusive tree kangaroos or try to spot one of the 327 bird species of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area.

Other highlights include the 10,000 year-old volcanic crater lakes of Barrine and Eacham and the camping grounds at Hydro Dam Lakes.
