Tropical North Queensland

Day 1 - Cable cars and mountain biking

My first adventure in Tropical North Queensland started at Skyrail in Cairns. It’s so close to the airport that it makes perfect sense as your first stop. What a way to take in the sights! I got to see the beautiful coast from up high, and as Cairns disappeared behind the mountains I found myself completely surrounded by rainforest. It's an amazing cable car ride.

At the top I was treated to a guided walking tour explaining the plants and animals native to this area. At the last lookout point I was amazed to learn that I was looking at rainforest stretching all the way to the horizon.

Remounting the cable car we soon crossed Barron Gorge. If you manage to visit during the wet season you’ll witness some gorgeous falls as the Barron River rushes down the rocks and pools on its way to the ocean.

I was impressed by the measures Skyrail take to safeguard the rainforest — having minimal impact on the environment while still providing easy access. It was a great way to start our Best Adventure holiday. It’s a definite must-do for everyone from nature-lovers to structural engineers.

Atherton bikingMy next adventure took me to Atherton in the Tropical Tablelands. Atherton is a small, unassuming town. But tucked away in the surrounding mountains you’ll find some amazing mountain bike trails. In fact there are almost 200 km of mapped tracks. There are heaps of virgin routes from old logging roads to fire trails. I had a great time riding a nice long incline on our way up Mount Baldy. The funny thing is that Mt Baldy isn’t even bald anymore, but the hill next to it is. Ask a local, they know which is which.

On the crest, our hard climb was rewarded with a beautiful view of the sun setting on the distant hills. Coming back down I hit a little creek with a huge splash, so we decided to hit it again. What a great way to cool off after riding the Tablelands!

Being in its fledgling state, the Tablelands Integrated Mountain Bike Association (TIMBA) is modelling itself on the amazing mountain bike links & hubs of Wales, with hopes of biker-friendly bed & breakfasts and detailed routes. This is the place to come for some leisurely riding or to explore some uncharted nature.

After a big day of sight-seeing and riding, there'sno better place to end the day than Peppers Beach Club & Spa in Port Douglas. My suite overlooked the pool and I hardly wanted to leave the room… but I had to check out the Lime & Pepper Restaurant to see what they could whip up for me. The best decision I made all day! I sampled the steak, fish, veggies, and the wine — food and quality go hand in hand at Lime & Pepper. I highly recommend the steak with a nice red wine. Don’t believe me? You'll have to taste for yourself.
