Admission Costs and Entry Information
The Ay Ot was built for Thomas Smith who purchased this property in 1895. The actual date of construction is unknown and not much is known about Smith; allegedly a gambler who committed suicide. During the early days of Charters Towers, blocks of land were given by deed of grant to those who could prove they could use them for the development of the city, thus the Ay Ot was built. It is difficult now to know how many of these fine homes were built, as in subsequent years, when gold was exhausted, many buildings were removed from Charters Towers and found their way to the coast.
Visitors can take a guided tour of this two-storey historical home, then enjoy tea and scones on the verandah afterwards. The ghost of Thomas Smith, the original owner is still in residence. Ay Ot is home to Zelia Alexander, one of the sculptures on the Heritage Sculpture Trail.
