Before mechanical cane harvesters, there were gangs of canecutters. Sometimes referred to as the gentlemen of the flashing blade, they laboured in the hot canefields with skill and grit. This competition brings that piece North Queensland history back to life. Staged each year at Home Hill, in the Burdekin Shire, this is the only hand cane-cutting competition in Australia. It is an iconic event for the Burdekin, which is regarded as the sugar capital of Australia.
