Gold Rush Heritage & history in the Townsville Region

Heritage

The cry of "gold!" went up in the late nineteenth century and a trail of pioneers headed west from Townsville to make their life in the goldfields. Visit Charters Towers and Ravenswood for evidence of this 1880s Gold Rush era and where plush, Victorian-era buildings line the streets.

Apart from gold, cattle drove prosperity in the west and you can stay at a sprawling pioneer homestead and join in the daily activities.

Back on the coast, a number of country towns have a proud sugar cane heritage. Step back in time and see what pioneer life in the tropics was really about.
