The Gympie Gold Rush Festival is an annual celebration of the discovery of gold in Gympie in 1867, and the subsequent establishment of Gympie City. The Festival began in 1967, when the town celebrated the centenary of James Nash's golden strike and the ensuring establishment of the town of Gympie. Huge crowds turned out, the initial success and public support for it, prompted organisers to begin planning a regular event to commemorate the town's golden past. The Gold Rush Festival has gone on to become an annual event. In 1973, six years after the festival officially started, celebrations included a float parade. Since the festival has become a week of diverse events that has come to incorporate arts, culture, history and live performances.... less
