Description

Few sporting events manage to attract more than their most loyal followers to travel out of town. Fewer still manage to coax people to travel hundreds of kilometres to participate - The Gregory River Canoe Marathon does just that.

To successfully complete the race, paddlers are required to complete 42 kilometres in one day. There are many classes to choose to compete in.

The Gregory River Canoe Marathon is a great spectator race with up to 2,000 people lining the river. Spectators cram for a top vantage point at all the good spill areas, where they are entertained by the manoeuvres of the experienced paddlers who get through the tight bends and obstacles, and the outcome for those who don't.

The Gregory River is fed by underground springs and crystal clear water is fringed with pandanus palms, Livingstona palms, paperbark trees, and fig trees providing a shady camping area.

From Mount Isa, there are two routes you can take.
The short way is to head towards Camooweal for approximately 120 kilometres and then turn onto the part-bitumen road that heads towards Burketown for approximately 200 kilometres. This route is not advisable for conventional vehicles. The road can become quite rough, with corrugations and occasional bull dust, though if driven with care is fine.
